JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jake Marisnick, Kyle Jensen and Mark Canha all hit solo home runs and Adam Conley pitched seven strong innings for the Jacksonville Suns (34-30) in a 6-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (34-33) at Bragan Field.
The game marked the second consecutive impressive offensive performance for Jacksonville, as the Suns posted six runs on nine hits and hit three home runs off Biscuits pitching in front of
fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Although Marisnick and Jensen produced runs from the top and middle of the order, respectively, it was the bottom of the Suns' lineup that did the bulk of the damage against Montgomery on Friday. The five through nine hitters in Jacksonville's order finished 7-for-14 with four runs scored, as well as four extra base hits.
"We swung the bats well tonight," Suns manager Andy Barkett said following his club's second straight win over Montgomery. "Everybody contributed...and Adam pitched a heck of a game. It was a nice win and hopefully we keep it going."
Mark Canha's solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning began the scoring for the Suns and put Jacksonville on top 1-0. But Montgomery came back with single runs in both the third and fourth innings against Conley to take a 2-1 lead.
Jacksonville forged ahead for good in the bottom half of the fourth thanks to second baseman Noah Perio. Perio came to the plate in the frame with two outs and two runners on against Biscuits starter Victor Mateo (2-7) and drove a double down the right field line to score both runners and put Jacksonville on top 3-2.
Danny Black added an RBI double later in the inning to push the lead to 4-2. Jensen's solo home run, his Southern League-leading 14th and seventh in the last 12 games, put the Suns up by three in the sixth, while Marisnick's bases-empty blast closed out the scoring in the seventh.
Conley, meanwhile, limited damage in the two scoring frames for Montgomery and otherwise dominated to earn his team-leading sixth win of the season. The left-hander struck out eight and scattered seven hits over a season-high seven innings of work before giving way to Grant Dayton and Michael Brady to finish the game.
"[Conley]'s pitch count was down and he was attacking the zone," Barkett said. "He was making pitches all night. The ball was coming out good and had late life. I just thought he threw the ball very well."
The only sour note for the Suns came when third baseman Audy Ciriaco had to be lifted from the game after sustaining an injury on the base paths in the bottom of the second inning. Ciriaco's status is uncertain for Saturday's contest.
The win kept the Suns two games back of the first place Mobile BayBears in the Southern League South division with three games left in the first half of the 2013 season.
Jacksonville, needing a win to keep a realistic shot at a first half division title, will send right-hander Jay Jackson (2-4, 2.96) to the mound against Biscuits right-hander Michael Colla (1-0, 1.50) in game three of the five-game series on Saturday evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. E.T.
