Jackson Generals News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Another old fashioned pitcher's duel ended in favor of the opposing side once again for the Generals Friday night. Jackson (28-35) dropped game two of the series to the Barons (42-25), 4-1 after another remarkable start by Taijuan Walker. In Walker's last six starts, the Generals' offense had only produced a combined three runs.
As both pitchers dueled, the first hit of the game was not recorded until the bottom of the fifth inning. The double was off the bat of Barons' designated hitter, Dan Black against Walker.
Taijuan Walker (L, 3-7, 6.0, 3,2,2,1,7) cruised through the Barons' lineup until back-to-back singles from Keenyn Walker and Trayce Thompson in the bottom of the seventh frame. After the singles, Nick Hill (1.0, 3,1,1,0,1) came on out of the pen. The Barons continued their attack on another infield single which loaded the bases. One pitch later, Dan Black singled up the middle to break the scoreless tie and put two runs on the board for the Barons. The runs were accounted to Walker. The damage continued with another RBI single up the middle which plated Andy Wilkins and cushioned the Barons' lead. Through seven, the Barons' led 3-0.
Jack Marder (0-1, R, 2 BB) led off the eighth with a walk, and Gabriel Noriega (1-2, 1B) broke up the Barons no-hit bid with a single into right field. With two on, two out, Denny Almonte (1-4, RBI) picked up his sixth RBI of the year on a RBI single that scored Marder. Unfortunately, the Generals could only cashed in on one run and end the frame with the bases loaded.
The Barons tallied another run in the eighth via a sacrifice fly. In the end, the 4-1 tally held to be the final.
Taijuan Walker suffered the loss, while Birmingham reliever Santos Rodriguez earned the win. The win tied the series at one game apiece. On the year, the Generals hold a 4-3 season lead against the Barons.
Saturday night, the Generals and Barons will square off for game three of the five-game set starting at 6:30 p.m. (CT). Generals' LHP James Gillheeney (2-1, 2.39) will take the mound for Jackson as Birmingham will send RHP Stephen McCray (6-4, 3.82) to the hill. The game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
