The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night, 9-7. The Chiefs jumped to an early 6-2 lead, but Toledo scored seven of the games final eight runs en route to the victory.

Syracuse (27-37) got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Eury Perez began the inning by reaching first on a throwing error by shortstop Argenis Diaz. Following a Danny Espinosa base hit, Corey Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tyler Moore. Moore then nailed a double into left field, clearing the bases and giving the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.

Toledo (27-41) answered swiftly in the top of the second inning. Danny Dorn led off the inning with a single into right field. Mike Cervenak followed with a double down the left-field line. Then, with one out, Bryan Holaday singled into left field, scoring Dorn from third. The next batter, Diaz, grounded into a fielder's choice, plating Cervenak from third, slicing the Chiefs' lead to 3-2.

Syracuse extended its lead in the bottom of the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Brian Jeroloman, Chris Rahl singled into center field. With runners on first and second, Perez bunted for a single to load the bases. After an Espinosa strikeout, Brown launched a double into right field, scoring both Jeroloman and Rahl. Moore followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Perez to increase the Chiefs' lead to 6-2.

The Mud Hens plated another run in the top of the third inning. After a Brandon Douglas single, Jordan Lennerton singled into right field, moving Douglas to third. The next batter, Nick Castellanos, hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Douglas from third base to cut the Syracuse lead to 6-3.

Toledo scored again in the top of the fourth inning. After consecutive singles from Diaz and Austin Jackson, Douglas grounded into a force out to shortstop, moving Diaz to third base. Then, Lennerton singled into right field, scoring Diaz from third to bring the Mud Hens within a pair of runs.

The Chiefs added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. Perez led off the inning with a booming home run over the left-field wall, extending the Syracuse lead to 7-4.

The Mud Hens put a couple of runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Castellanos launched a ground-rule double over the wall in left-center field. Dorn followed with a two-run home run deep over the right-center field wall, slashing the Chiefs' lead to 7-6.

In the top of the seventh, Toledo took the lead from Syracuse. With one out, Holaday singled into center field. After a Diaz groundout, Jackson ripped a two-out single into right field, putting runners on the corners. Douglas followed with a single off of pitcher Mike Crotta, scoring Holaday from third and tying the game at 7-7. After Tyler Robertson replaced Crotta, Lennerton walked to load the bases. Castellanos then smashed a two-out single into left field, driving in both Jackson and Douglas to take a 9-7 lead.

Syracuse and Toledo play the second game of a four-game series on Friday at 7:05. Right-hander Matt Torra takes the mound for the Chiefs while the Mud Hens send left-hander Jose Alvarez to the hill.
