Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (JUNE 12, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash fell behind early, and the Lynchburg Hillcats rode that early edge to a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
In the very first inning, Lynchburg (34-30) loaded the bases against Winston starter Chris Beck (6-7) without a hit, but Beck was able to wiggle out of the jam. After getting turned away in the first, the Hillcats would take the lead in the second when Will Skinner led the frame off with a solo home run. Later in the inning, the visitors would tack on two more on a two-run single from Ross Heffley.
Lynchburg would add a fourth run to their lead in the third when Kyle Kubitza made it consecutive innings with leadoff homers against Beck. That third inning would be the right-hander's final frame of work. As a result, Beck's career-high four-game winning streak came to an end.
Winston-Salem (35-31) would finally get on the board against Lynchburg starter Greg Ross (2-3) in the fifth. Grant Buckner singled with one away, but both runs would come across with two down. Martin Medina lined a double down the line in left to bring Buckner home. Medina advanced to third on a throw to the plate on the play and then touched home on ball four to Joey DeMichele, which happened to be a wild pitch.
Lynchburg would tally an unearned run in the seventh, but the Dash would answer right back. Buckner was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but remained at first with two down. DeMichele and Adam Heisler would string together back-to-back singles against reliever Matt Chaffee, the latter of which brought Buckner home. However, Chaffee minimized the damage in the inning, and Winston-Salem would not threaten again.
The Hillcats would add a sixth run when Skinner launched his second home run of the night in the eighth to complete the scoring. Ronan Pacheco then closed out the Dash, retiring Winston in order over the final two frames to earn his first save of the season.
With Myrtle Beach knocking off Frederick Wednesday night, Winston-Salem is now two games behind the Pelicans in the race for the first half Southern Division championship, which will be decided no later than Sunday.
The Dash will now hit the road as they wrap up the first half with a four-game series at Frawley Stadium against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Winston-Salem will start righty Jake Cose (1-1, 5.73), while Wilmington will counter with southpaw John Lamb (4-6, 5.37). Coverage on wsdash.com begins with the Pregame Dash at 6:50, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Winston-Salem's next homestand begins on June 24 as the Dash open up a four-game series against the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
