Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON ROLLS TO WIN OVER HILLCATS The Dash scored three runs in the third inning and never looked back in a 7-2 victory over Lynchburg on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem starter Chris Bassitt worked into the seventh inning and allowed just one run en route to his team-leading seventh quality start. Six different Dash hitters drove in at least one run, with Rangel Ravelo collecting a pair of RBIs. With the win, Winston improved to 3-7 against the Hillcats this season (2-4 at home).

BIG DAY FOR BASSITT In addition to earning his sixth victory, which is good for a share of the team lead and tied for second in the Carolina League, Bassitt was named an All-Star late Tuesday afternoon. He will replace Salem southpaw Henry Owens in the Midsummer Classic. Bassitt, who is heading to his first minor league All-Star Game, is 6-2 with a 3.54 earned run average, which is 12th-best on the circuit. He is third in the league in innings pitched (73.2) and sixth in strikeouts (68).

BECK-ING UP HIS LAST EFFORT Chris Beck makes his first start since twirling the second nine-inning complete game shutout in the Dash era (2009-present). Beck scattered five hits and faced two more than the minimum in Friday's win over Wilmington. Beck, who joined Matt Heidenreich (June 25, 2012, vs. Salem) in this category, has a 2.79 ERA (sixth in the CL).

DeMICHELE'S DOUBLE DIGITS Dash infielder Joey DeMichele has hit safely in 11 consecutive games dating back to June 2. During this run, he is hitting .370 (17-for-46) with three RBIs and seven runs scored. Dating back to May 26, he has hit safely in 17 of 19 games and raised his overall batting average 61 points to .248. DeMichele is the fourth Winston-Salem hitter to put together a hitting streak of 10 or more games, a claim that no other CL club can make. His run is tied with Mark Haddow (April 6-18) and Rangel Ravelo (May 3-28) for the longest hitting streak by a Dash hitter in 2013.

ONE GAME DOWN WITH SIX TO GO Both Winston-Salem and first-place Myrtle Beach won Tuesday night, so the Dash remain one game behind the Pelicans with five days left in the first-half Southern Division race. The Birds claimed their fifth win in a row thanks to a 5-4 triumph over Frederick down on the Grand Strand. Following tonight's sweep chance versus the Keys, Myrtle Beach entertains Carolina (8-1) in a five-game, four-day set to end the first half.

FLYING HIGH Winston-Salem outfielder Courtney Hawkins is hitting .286 (12-for-42) with five homers and 15 RBIs in his 11 games since returning from a month-long stint on the shelf (left shoulder). Hawkins has hit 12 homers in 121 at-bats over 34 games, which calculates to one homer every 10.1 at-bats. Among minor league hitters with 10 or more home runs, Hawkins owns the lowest at-bats per home run ratio.

FIRST HALF WRAP IN WILMINGTON Following Wednesday's rubber match, Winston-Salem will complete the first half with a four-game series in Wilmington. The Dash have dominated the Blue Crew, winning nine of the first 10 meetings in 2013. Winston has outscored Wilmington 47-18 in those contests. Dash hurlers collectively own a 1.86 earned run average against the Rocks. Since the start of the 2012 season, the Dash are 24-6 against the northernmost club in the Carolina League.

DASH DOTS The Dash dropped to a league-worst 1-8 on Monday with their series-opening loss two days ago, while Winston improved to 8-2 on Tuesday last night...Dating back to May 31, the Dash have won seven of their last eight home games...During this spurt, Winston has averaged 7.8 runs per game...Brandon Hardin's save on Tuesday was just the fourth by a Dash reliever since April 29...With a win tonight, Winston-Salem would climb six games above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
