Del Valle Named an All-Star, Baez & Geiger in Home-Run Derby

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Florida State League announced, today, that Daytona Cubs pitcher Frank Del Valle has been named a 2013 FSL All-Star. Additionally, Cubs infielders Javier Baez and Dustin Geiger have been selected to participate in the Home Run Derby prior to the All-Star Game on Saturday.

Del Valle, 23, is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 17 relief appearances for Daytona this season. The Havana, CU native has converted four of five save opportunities for the Cubs, and currently has the second-highest strikeout/nine inning ratio in the FSL (12.30/9). Del Valle has had scoreless outings in 12 of his 17 relief appearances this season, including a season-high four innings on 6/4 in Bradenton to preserve a 1-0 shutout. Del Valle, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent by Chicago in 2011, joins OF John Andreoli, INF Javier Baez, INF Dustin Geiger and OF Jorge Soler as Daytona Cubs on the 2013 FSL All-Star team.

Baez and Geiger join Andy Burns (DUN), Maikel Franco (CLR), Dustin Lawley (STL), Stephen Piscotty (PMB), Nick Ramirez (BRE) and Kennys Vargas (FTM) as the eight Home Run Derby participants.

Baez, 20, currently ranks third in the FSL with 13 home runs, fourth in the league with 44 RBIs, third in the league in slugging percentage (.570), second in extra-base hits (34), second in runs scored (45) and third in total bases (131). The Bayamon, PR native is hitting .291 and has had two ultra-standout games for Daytona this season. On 6/1 vs. Brevard County, Baez went 5-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored. On 6/10 vs. Fort Myers, he went 4-for-4 and became only the second player in FSL history to hit four home runs in one game (Ryan Flaherty '06). He also drove in seven runs in the game. Overall in eight June games, Baez is hitting .500 (15-for-30) with five home runs, five doubles and 15 RBIs. Baez was selected by the Cubs in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2011 draft.

Geiger, 21, currently leads the FSL in RBIs with 52. The Merritt Island, FL native is hitting .297 with seven home runs. Geiger is hitting .389 (42-for-108) with runners on base, .417 with the bases loaded (5-for-12) and .380 with runners in scoring position (27-for-71). Geiger was selected by the Cubs in the 24th round of the 2010 draft.

The Florida State League All-Star game will be played this Saturday, June 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. The Home Run Derby will take play before the game.
