Clearwater Clipped 4-2 in Ten by St. Lucie

CLEARWATER (Tuesday, June 11) - The Clearwater Threshers dropped a critical game 4-2 in ten innings to the visiting St. Lucie Mets in front of 3,210 fans at Bright House Field.

The Threshers (33-30) failed to gain ground on the Dunedin Blue Jays for the second straight night, tallying all their scoring on two solo homers. Clearwater couldn't overtake the Mets (33-29), who managed to strand 13 Threshers baserunners over the course of the game.

St. Lucie kicked off the scoring in the top of the first against Threshers starter Nick Hernandez. Robbie Shields singled with one out, and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Matt Reynolds. After Shields was caught stealing third, Aderlin Rodriguez singled Reynolds home, making it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Mets tacked on a second run in the top of the second inning. Charley Thurber singled past Brock Stassi at first base, and Dimas Ponce drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Cam Maron sliced a single past shortstop Jonathan Roof, and Thurber sped around third to score and give St. Lucie the 2-0 advantage.

Clearwater cut into the margin in the bottom of the second. Roof turned on a 1-0 fastball from Mets starter Alex Panteliodis and crushed it over the left field fence for a solo homer. The blast was Roof's second of the season, and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Threshers drew even in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, left fielder Aaron Altherr slammed a 2-1 fastball from Panteliodis over the left field wall for his own solo longball. The big fly tied the ballgame at two runs apiece, where it stayed until extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, St. Lucie pulled ahead again. Rodriguez sliced a two-out single to left field against Threshers reliever Colton Murray (2-4) to put a runner on for Dustin Lawley. The slugger jacked his 12th homer of the year to left field, making it a 4-2 lead for St. Lucie. Clearwater got Roof and Stassi on in the bottom of the tenth with two outs, but Kyrell Hudson struck out to end the game.

Hernandez took a no-decision, with two runs allowed on five hits and four walks in five frames; he fanned five. Juan Sosa pitched four splendid shutout innings, striking out six and allowing just one hit and one walk. Murray took the loss, with two runs allowed on two hits and a walk against one strikeout in one inning.

Clearwater will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, with southpaw Hoby Milner starting for the Threshers against St. Lucie righty Rainy Lara. It's Yappy Hour at Bright House Field!
