Winston-Salem Dash News Release
DASH WIN GAME 1; GAME 2 POSTPONED Winston-Salem concluded a rain-shortened set with the Salem Red Sox by winning the opener of what was supposed to be a doubleheader 7-4. However, a powerful thunderstorm rolled over LewisGale Field, decimating the field and knocking out the power. Before the rains came, the Dash took a four-run lead in the first and never looked back. Seven starters had at least one hit, while six scored at least once. Starter Chris Beck snapped a personal five-game losing streak with his fifth quality start of 2013. The game postponed from Thursday will be made up as part of a twin bill June 3 at 5:30 p.m.
HIGH FIVE The Dash have won five in a row for the first time in 2013, which is tied for the second-longest winning streak in the CL this year. First-place Myrtle Beach won seven in a row from May 7-13, while Potomac also had a five-game run from May 8-12. Winston's current streak is its longest since claiming six straight victories from August 12-17, 2012. Last season, the Dash posted four win streaks of five games or more.
RAVELO ROLLING Dash infielder Rangel Ravelo has hit safely in all six games during his High-A career. Ravelo boasts an average of .550 (11-for-20) with nine RBIs and four runs scored. Following his first career promotion to Winston-Salem on May 2, Ravelo played in two games before reopening a cut on his left thumb that was suffered during his time at Low-A Kannapolis. Upon his return from a two-week disabled list stint, Ravelo is 7-for-15 with eight RBIs. Before joining the Dash, Ravelo hit .226 in 17 games with the Intimidators.
FARRELL HURTING THE RED SOX Jeremy Farrell, the son of Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, thrived against an affiliate of his dad's club. In two games, Farrell was 5-for-8 with a homer, four RBIs and four runs scored. He is now one RBI shy of Myrtle Beach's Trever Adams (34) for the league lead.
ALWAYS SUPPORT YOUR BECK Thursday starter Chris Beck earned his first victory since April 18 by posting his fifth quality start of 2013. The righty owns a 2.82 earned run average, which is good for ninth on the circuit. Prior to this start, Beck had only received 23 total runs of support, or 2.9 runs per game. The Dash had not surpassed the four-run mark in any of his first eight starts, but Winston recorded its highest first-inning offensive output Thursday with four tallies before he threw a pitch. There are 21 minor leaguers with at least six losses this season, and Beck boasts the best ERA among all of them. Only one other (Bradenton's Eliecer Navarro, 3.78) has an ERA better than 4.50.
RETURN FOR REVENGE Winston-Salem and Carolina meet in Zebulon for the first time since Opening Weekend from April 5-7. The Mudcats outscored the Dash 20-6 en route to a series sweep. Since then, however, Carolina has gone 12-30 (.286) and has lost 14 one-run games. Winston took two of three from the Muddies at BB&T Ballpark from April 12-14.
SWEEPING IS NOT COMMON The Dash had not been swept in their previous 57 series before Carolina's season-opening brooming of Winston-Salem. Since becoming the Dash prior to the 2009 season, Winston has only suffered eight sweeps. Dating back to July of 2011, the Dash have only been on the wrong end of one sweep in their last 71 sets.
HEISLER, MiLB-BEST STREAK ON HOLD Outfielder Adam Heisler, who owns the longest active on-base streak in Minor League Baseball, was placed on the disabled list with a knee injury, the White Sox announced Wednesday. Dating back to last season, Heisler has reached base in 41 straight games. He hurt his knee last Sunday (May 12) in Potomac and missed the following three games (May 13-15) due to that injury. After returning to the lineup from Thursday through Saturday, the injury sidelined Heisler once again on Sunday and Tuesday.
