Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Carolina League announced Monday that Pelicans shortstop Luis Sardinas has been named Carolina Player of the Week for his performance from May 13-19. During the seven-game stretch, Sardinas hit .419 (13-for-31) with a double, two triples and nine runs batted in.

Sardinas has played in 41 of the Pelicans 43 games this season, posting a .302 batting average, the sixth best mark league wide. He ranks fourth in the league in hits (49) and places third with 12 stolen bases.

On the most recent road trip, Sardinas had back-to-back four-hit performances. On May 16, his 20th birthday, Sardinas amassed his second four-hit night in as many nights to go along with a career-high five RBIs.

This is the second straight weekly honor for a Pelican. Left-hander Victor Payano was the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week May 6-12. The left-hander leads the club with 50 strikeouts in 42.1 innings and has surrendered just one earned run in his last 13.2 innings. Payano will start Tuesday's game against the Carolina Mudcats.

The first place Pelicans (27-16) have scored more runs (214) than any team in the Carolina League while Payano and the pitching staff have helped allow the fewest runs (163) in the league. The Pelicans have also won nine straight home games.

The Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, will seek their tenth straight home victory tomorrow (May 21st) when the Carolina Mudcats, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, come to TicketReturn.com Field for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. It will be a Team Tuesday presented by Sheriar Press and 100.3 The Team. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Rafael Furcal poster.

May 22nd is another Wiener Wednesday presented by Hebrew National with $1 hot dogs all game long. The series concludes with a Thirsty Thursday ($1 Bud and Bud Light Draughts from 6-8pm) on May 23rd. Following a Friday off day, the home stand continues when the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Kansas City Royals, arrive for a three-game weekend series. Saturday will be a double-header beginning at 6:05 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by calling 918-6000.
