Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, claimed a 10-inning, 4-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday afternoon. Left fielder Jeff Kobernus scored the game-winning run in the 10th on a Chris Marrero sacrifice fly after stealing two bases in the inning.
Kobernus owned the 10th inning, which he led off with a walk against Toledo closer Bruce Rondon. With Will Rhymes at the plate, Kobernus stole second base without a throw on the first pitch of the at-bat. He broke for third base on the very next pitch and slid in safely ahead of catcher Ramon Cabrera's throw. After Rhymes grounded out, Marrero sliced a 1-2 pitch into right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Kobernus for the eventual game-winning run.
Syracuse (17-27) kicked off the scoring immediately with a pair of first-inning runs against Mud Hens starter Shawn Hill. Chris Rahl led the game off with a single, extending his hit streak to a team-high 13 games, and stole second base with Kobernus at the plate. After a pair of outs, Hill walked Marrero and Corey Brown to load the bases for Micah Owings. The Chiefs' designated hitter fell behind in the count before slamming a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line for a double, scoring the game's first two runs.
The Chiefs added a fourth-inning run thanks to the team's bottom of the order. With one out, seventh-place hitter Mike Costanzo doubled to deep left field. Two batters later, catcher Brian Jeroloman ripped a hard ground ball into right field for a run-scoring single, giving Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
Toledo (15-30) would respond by tying the score with three fifth-inning runs off of Syracuse starter Chris Young. After Quintin Berry started the inning by reaching on a Marrero error, third baseman Kevin Russo doubled to right-center field to score Berry. Two batters later, shortstop Argenis Diaz doubled down the left-field line after fouling off four two-strike pitches, with Russo scoring to cut the Chiefs' lead to 3-2. After a Cabrera walk, first baseman Jordan Lennerton collected Toledo's third double of the inning, knocking a line drive into right field to score Diaz and tie the game at three.
The score stayed that way until the 10th, thanks in part to some strong work from Syracuse's bullpen. Right-hander Tanner Roark tossed two-plus scoreless innings before giving way to Xavier Cedeno. The Syracuse left-hander picked up the win, striking out four in three hitless, scoreless innings.
Syracuse and Toledo will conclude their four-game series on Tuesday morning at 10:30. Chiefs right-hander Yunesky Maya and Mud Hens right-hander Derek Hankins are the scheduled starters.
