CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, May 19, 2013) - Chivas USA defender Steven Purdy has been called up by El Salvador's National Team to face Venenzuela on May 22 in preparation for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the club announced today. The friendly will take place in Ciudad de Mérida in Venezuela.

Purdy will join La Selecta on Monday, May 20, following Sunday's match between Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center. He will then return to the Rojiblancos in time to be available for MLS' Week 13 match at Colorado Rapids on Saturday, May 25.

"I feel happy to be returning to La Selecta and above all to represent my country and face a very good national team like Venezuela," said Purdy. "I always work hard day after day to win a permanent spot on the team and to be considered for El Salvador's national team. The Gold Cup is right around the corner and I want to be part of the final cut."

Although Purdy is looking forward to representing El Salvador, the first-year Red-and-White defender is focused on tonight's Western Conference battle with RSL. The Rojiblancos fell in the first of three meetings programmed this season versus RSL in April by the minimal difference at Rio Tinto Stadium and know it is crucial to come away with a result in tonight's rematch.

"Before anything, I'm focused on getting three points tonight in front of our fans and get on a winning streak as a team," added Purdy. "That is the only thing on my mind at this moment, everything else will follow."

Born in Bakersfield, Calif. Purdy is the son of an American father and Salvadorian mother. The 28-year-old was elected to represent El Salvador for the first time in 2011 as part of CONCACAF's Gold Cup competition. It was in the Quarterfinals against Panama that Purdy made his international debut. On October 11, 2011, he recorded his first goal and assist in a 4-0 rout over the Caiman Islands at El Salvador's Estadio de Cuscatlan.
