(Waldorf, Md., May 19, 2013) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Blue Crabs struck first in the first inning on a Ryan Mulhern solo home run. The Ducks evened the score in the third inning on a RBI double by Joash Brodin. The Blue Crabs retook the lead in the bottom half of the frame, as Sean Smith drove in a run with a single.
Southern Maryland added to their lead in with an RBI double by Cesar Nicolas in the fourth inning. The Ducks scratched one run across in the fifth, when Dan Lyons drove in a run with a ground out. The score remained 3-2 Blue Crabs until Adam Bailey hit a two-out, two-run home run in the eighth inning. The Ducks bullpen threw two scoreless innings to close out the victory.
Ducks starter Dontrelle Willis (2-1) earned the win, throwing seven innings, giving up five hits and three runs, two earned while striking out six. Jeremy Sowers (1-3) took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
Joash Brodin led the Ducks with three hits, and Adam Bailey drove in two runs.
The Ducks open up a four-game series against the Camden Riversharks Monday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Campbell's Field. Long Island returns home on Friday, May 24 when they host the Blue Crabs in the first game of a three-game set. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It's "Don't Fry Day" with Skin Cancer Awareness, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Duck Mini Bats, courtesy of Stony Brook Children's Hospital.
