Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

The Chattanooga Lookouts finally were able to avoid extra innings, but nine were not enough for them to come back and win their homestand opener Friday night.

A four-run second inning held up for the host Tennessee Smokies, who hung on for a 4-3 win in the opener of the five-game set. Teams resume hostilities tonight at 7:15 with Chris Reed (1-4) looking to turn around a frustrating season for the Lookouts (16-24)..

The Smokies stunned Lookouts starter Zach Lee and the crowd of 3,714 with a four-run second inning.

Tennessee third baseman Chrisitan Villanueva, well on his way to a 3-for-4 day, broke the ice with an RBI double before Lee recorded an out in the second. Lee wild pitched home the inning's second run and Ronald Torreyes capped the inning with a two-run single.

Lee (3-3) settled down, but came out after five innings, allowing only the four runs on five hits, before yielding to Kyle Cofield.

The Lookouts were finally able to break the ice in the fourth inning thanks to their two top prospect outfielders. Joc Pederson, hitting .344, singled and scored on a double by Yasiel Puig, the 23rd RBI of the season for the big Cuban.

First baseman Chris Jacobs made the game interesting with a two-run home run in the seventh, but otherwise, Smokies starter Kyle Hendricks (3-1) rolled through the Lookouts' lineup for seven innings, allowing five hits.

Zach Rosscup earned his first save for the Smokies by striking out the side in the ninth.
