Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN - The Jackson Generals (17-22) held the Birmingham Barons' (26-15) offense to one run for only the fifth time this season as they took the series opener, 2-1. Steven Proscia (1-3, 2B, RBI, K) snapped a 0-for-27 streak at the dish with an RBI double that plated the deciding run in the seventh.
Starters Roenis Elias (2-3, 2.90) and Spencer Arroyo (L, 3-2, 2.10) went six innings and allowed only three hits apiece, both claiming terrific performances. The two starters mirrored each other in the second inning, as runs came across for both teams. Michael Early's RBI single scored Dan Black and Francisco Martinez (2-2, 2B, RBI) hit a double to bring Vinnie Catricala (1-3, R) in to score.
The pitching duel continued into the seventh until the Generals' first basemen broke out of his slump off of Barons' reliever Daniel Webb. Webb only allowed one hit, but it would turn out to be the determining factor in the first of the five-game series.
Stephen Kohlscheen (W, 2-1, 2.05) made a strong impression coming out of the bullpen. The right-hander picked up where Elias left off, surrendering only a single and striking out seven of the eleven batters he faced. He sat down the ninth in order, striking out the side.
The game only included eight hits, four by each team. The Generals are now 15-2 when leading after seven innings and 6-13 in one-run games.
Saturday will be a busy day at the Ballpark in Jackson. The Barons and Generals will play a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 4:05 CST. Chance Ruffin (1-1, 2.79) will go up against Erik Johnson (2-2, 2.58) in game one. Wes Whisler (0-1, 6.28) is scheduled to go for the Barons against LHP Kyle Hunter (0-0, 0.00) for Jackson. If you can't make it to the ballpark, the game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
