PEARL, MS -- The Jacksonville Suns plated two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Mississippi Braves 2-1 in game one of a five-game series at Trustmark Park Friday night. The series continues Saturday at 6:00 PM.

Mississippi (25-16) scored one run on five hits while Jacksonville (23-15) scored two runs on six hits. With the win, Jacksonville gains ground in the Southern League South Division and pulls within a half game of the division-leading M-Braves.

Jose Martinez launched a solo home run in the bottom of the second to put the M-Braves out front 1-0. With the long ball, Martinez has homered in three straight games, becoming the fourth player in the M-Braves history to do so.

Jacksonville took a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Mark Canha and Audy Ciriaco reached on walks and moved up a base after a wild pitch. Noah Perio then delivered a two-run, two-out single to put the Suns out front.

The M-Braves loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth but a double play ball ended the threat. Edward Salcedo led off the bottom of the ninth with a single but the M-Braves could not capitalize.

Jay Jackson (2-1) went seven innings for the Suns, limiting the Braves to just one earned run on three hits and two walks. He struck out eight batters. Edgar Olmos (S, 1) came on to shut the door and record the final out of the night.

Juan Jaime (0-1) surrendered the loss, giving up two earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two in his only inning. Cody Martin started and worked six innings for the M-Braves but did not factor in the decision. He gave up no runs on four hits while striking out seven batters.

The M-Braves take on the Suns in game two of this five-game series Saturday night. Mississippi has not announced its starter but the Suns send right-hander Sam Dyson (0-3, 2.65) to the hill. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM.
