Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped a 6-3 decision to the Columbus Clippers on Friday night. The Clippers scored all six of their runs in the first three innings en route to a win in the series finale.
Columbus (24-18) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. Ezequiel Carrera began the game with a single into center field against Chiefs starter Ryan Perry. After a Matt Lawson walk, Carrera and Lawson stole bases on separate pitches with Jeremy Hermida at the plate. Later in the at-bat, Hermida grounded out to Perry, scoring Carrera from third base.
Syracuse (15-26) got the run back in the bottom of the first inning against Clippers right-hander Brett Brach. With one out, Jeff Kobernus walked. After a Corey Brown strikeout, Chris Marrero came to the plate with Kobernus on first base. After Kobernus stole second, Marrero lined a base hit into right field, plating Kobernus from second to tie the game at 1-1.
The Clippers took the lead once again in the top of the second inning. Matt Carson led off the inning and reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Zach Walters. After a Juan Diaz walk and Omir Santos fly out, Carrera dug in for his second at-bat. The left fielder launched a triple into deep center field, scoring both Carson and Diaz to give Columbus a 3-1 lead. He scored two batters late on a wild pitch, extending the lead to three.
Columbus extended its lead in the top of the third inning. Lonnie Chisenhall led off the inning with a walk. After a Cord Phelps strikeout, Tim Fedroff walked to end Perry's night. Right-hander Jeff Mandel then entered and struck out Carson before surrendering a two-run double to Diaz. That increased the Clippers' lead to 6-1.
The score remained that way until the Chiefs rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Chris Rahl singled to end Brach's night. Right-hander Jerry Gil then entered and walked Kobernus, putting a pair of runners aboard for Brown. The Syracuse center fielder followed with a two-run double slammed into left field, plating both runners to cut the deficit to three runs. Gil recovered, though, by getting Marrero to line out and Carlos Rivero to strike out.
The Chiefs next head to Toledo to begin an eight-game road trip, with a 7:00 start time on Saturday night. Syracuse left-hander Danny Rosenbaum is set to throw against Mud Hens left-hander Ramon Garcia.
