Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes out-hit the visiting San Jose Giants on Thursday night, but it mattered little as Rancho fell to its California League rival, 5-2, at LoanMart Field.

The Quakes had 10 hits on the night, but went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on-base.

James Campbell (L, 1-3) held San Jose in check through the first four, but could not make it out of the fifth inning. An error and a single preceded Campbell's exit and Ryan Acosta walked Shawn Payne to load the bases for Chris Lofton. The Giants centerfielder launched a bases-clearing triple over the head of Noel Cuevas in center field to put San Jose ahead for good, 3-1.

The Quakes got some help from the long ball, but not with runners on.

Angelo Songco put the Quakes on the board and on top with a majestic solo shot over the right field wall in the fourth inning -- his fourth of the season. And Darnell Sweeney cut the deficit to one with his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning, a no-doubter just inside the right field foul pole.

Bobby Coyle, Ryan Mount and Scott Schebler each posted 2-for-4 efforts for the Quakes, but could not squeeze out a run.

San Jose starter Chris Marlowe served up the pair of solo homers and seven hits, but that was good enough to earn the victory. Marlowe (W, 3-0) struck out two and walked two in five innings.

The loss drops the Quakes to .500 in the standings at 20-20 on the season, but they will have a chance to earn one back on Friday night. Garrett Gould (1-2, 7.47 ERA) gets the call for Rancho, while left-hander Kelvin Marte (1-0, 2.77 ERA) takes the mound for San Jose.
