
Rogers Blasts Stars Past M-Braves

PEARL, MS -- Jason Rogers blasted a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to lead the Huntsville Stars to a 5-4 victory over the Mississippi Braves Thursday night at Trustmark Park. With the win, Huntsville takes the series three-games-to-two and the Braves turn their attention to the Suns who visit for a five-game series Friday through Tuesday.
Mississippi (25-15) scored four runs on seven hits while the Stars (16-24) plated five runs on nine hits. For the M-Braves, Tommy La Stella and Edward Salcedo each had two-hit nights at the plate.
Huntsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Nick Shaw singled and took second a sacrifice bunt. Jason Rogers followed with a base hit to left, putting runners at the corners. Rene Tosoni then drove in Shaw with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Mycal Jones led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run into the Bud Light Picnic Pavilion, tying the game at 1-1. It was Jones' first long ball of the season.
In the top of the fifth, Shaw singled, Ozzie Chavez walked and Tosoni walked to load the bases. Brock Kjeldgaard followed with an infield single to plate Shaw and give the Stars a 2-1 lead. Chavez came in later on a passed ball to make it 3-1.
Jose Martinez blasted a two-run home run over the flag poles in left field to tie the game at 3-3 for the M-Braves in the bottom of the seventh. Mycal Jones had reached on a walk.
The M-Braves took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Edward Salcedo singled before stealing second and third. He later came in to score on a passed ball.
Chavez walked to start the ninth for the Stars. Rogers then blasted a two-run homer to left-center field, putting Huntsville out front 5-4.
Greg Holle (2-1) picked up the win, working the eighth innings for the Stars. Casey Medlen (S, 6) came in for the ninth and notched his sixth save of the season. Pat Egan (2-1) suffered the blown save and the loss for the M-Braves.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Aaron Northcraft went four and one-third for the M-Braves, giving up three runs and two earned runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out five. Arcenio Leon went five frames for the Stars, limiting the Braves to one earned run on three hits, a homer and three walks. He also struck out five.
The M-Braves continue a 10-game homestand with a five-game series against the Jacksonville Suns Friday through Tuesday. In game one of the series, Braves right-hander Cody Martin (1-2, 3.31) counters Suns righty Jay Jackson (1-1, 2.89). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
