Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Charlie Cutler was 3-for-3 with three RBI while David Bromberg dealt five hitless innings of relief to pilot the Curve to a, 6-2, series-clinching victory over the Trenton Thunder in front of a season-best crowd of 6,855 at Peoples Natural Gas Field on Thursday. Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Charlie Morton continued his major league rehab assignment on Thursday, going four innings and throwing 61 pitches. He gave up a pair of runs, both coming on solo homers, but those were the only hits he allowed on the day.
Bromberg (2-4) came in to start the fifth, after Morton went the first four, and allowed the Curve offense a chance to stretch its legs by no-hitting the Thunder of his five full innings of relief work. He set down each of the first 12 batters he faced on Thursday before surrendering a leadoff walk to Ramon Flores in the ninth. The California native struck out six and walked one in his five innings of tremendous work.
While Bromberg was taking care of the Thunder offense, the Curve offense went to work in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie. Drew Maggi doubled to left and was brought home by Alex Dickerson's triple to right-center field to put the Curve in front, 3-2. Dickerson scored two batters later on Cutler's single to center to extend the lead to, 4-2. Adalberto Santos continued the hit parade and singled to center field and allowed Jarek Cunningham to score from second for the inning's third run.
The Santos single ended the day for Thunder starter Matt Tracy (4-3), who continued to struggle on the road. Tracy was saddled with all six runs in the game (four earned) and suffered the loss to drop to 0-3 in road starts this year.
Thunder reliever Frank Lewis entered the game for Tracy and two pitches into his appearance he attempted to pick off Santos at first. His throw sailed over the head of first baseman Kyle Roller and allowed Cutler to score from third for what turned out to be the game's final run.
Cutler's first RBI of the game actually put the Curve in front, 1-0, in the first inning. His second RBI of the game also put the Curve back in front after Trenton had plated one off Morton in the second. Drew Maggi, who was celebrating his 24th birthday on Thursday, grabbed three hits in the win and scored a pair of runs.
With the win on Thursday, the Curve finish their homestand 5-2 before embarking on the seven-game road trip.
Winners of seven of their last 10 games, the Curve (18-22) head out on the road to take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA - San Francisco) starting at 7:05 p.m. Friday night at The Diamond. The Curve's next homestand begins Friday, May 24th when the Squirrels return to Curve, Pa. for Memorial Day weekend.
On the hill for the Curve Friday night in the River City will be RHP Casey Sadler (4-3, 3.18), who looks to avenge a loss suffered at the hands of the Squirrels last time out. He'll once again be matched up with Squirrels RHP Craig Westcott (2-3, 3.74) for a second straight start.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. For tickets and more information on the Curve's Memorial Day homestand, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
