Evansville Otters News Release
(MARION, ILLINOIS) -The Evansville Otters used a two run eighth inning to erase a deficit, come from behind, and beat the Southern Illinois Miners 5-4 on Tuesday morning.
Infielder Frank Martinez went 2-for-3 in the contest with the game-tying eighth inning home run. He finished with three runs batted in as Evansville has now won back to back games.
Evansville took the early lead on the annual Miner's Kids Day game. Shortly after the 10 o'clock first pitch, outfielder John Schultz reached on a single, moved to second on a double from infielder Ryan Kresky and scored on a Martinez groundout.
After Southern Illinois plated a run in the first and second innings, the Otters rallied back to take the lead in the third. Trailing 2-1, Evansville earned back to back walks, setting up Martinez for the game-tying RBI single. First baseman Andrew Clark followed with the go-ahead sacrifice fly, elevating Evansville to a 4-3 lead.
But once again, Southern Illinois would clamor back. The Miners tied the game in the third and went ahead 4-3 in the next inning, only to see neither team score again until the eighth.
After the Martinez home run evened the score, Clark crushed a triple and designated hitter Nick Schwaner scored him on the game winning double to center field.
Relievers Matt Little and Eric Massingham pitched the final two scoreless innings to secure the win.
Schultz went 3 for 4 in the game with two runs scored. The Otters finished with 10 hits in the game. The Evansville Otters regular season begins on Friday, May 17 against the Normal CornBelters .
