Exhibition Play Concludes with Promise

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were defeated by the Evansville Otters at Rent One Park 5-4. Despite the loss, the Miners registered eight hits.

The Otters got on the board first off Miners starting pitcher Blake Nation in the top of the first inning by a score of 1-0. The Miners answered right back in the bottom of the first inning off Otters starting pitcher Blake Monar by Ken Gregory grounding into a fielder's choice to tie the game at one.

The Miners took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning off Monar when Cannon Lester hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. The Otters re-took the lead 3-2 in the top of the third inning by scoring two more runs off of Blake Nation. The Miners tied it for a second time when Jason Ganek scored on a groundout to first base by Ken Gregory. Gregory finished the day with two runs batted in.

The Miners took 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning off Otters reliever Jason Ridenhour when Cannon Lester hit a RBI double to score Mario Mercedes. That would be the last run the Miners would score.

The Otters scored two runs off pitcher Nick Gillung in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-4 lead and eventual 5-4 win over the Miners at Rent One Park. The Miners would conclude exhibition play with a 3-2 record.

Dayne Quist pitched two scoreless innings. Michael Carden and Drew Bailey eached pitched a scoreless inning.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
