McCann's Big Hit Lifts Erie to Victory

The Erie SeaWolves (23-13) have a flair for the dramatic, as a key 8th-inning hit helped erase an early deficit and seal a 5-4 win over the Reading Fightin' Phils (14-22). This marked the third time this season that Erie had rallied to after trailing through six innings.

Tyson Gilles kicked off the game with a double for Reading, advancing to third on Edgar Duarn's groundout. He would score on an RBI single from Albert Cartwright.The Fightin' Phils got more help from Cartwright in the fourth inning with a leadoff triple. First baseman Jim Murphy's sacrifice fly brought the second baseman home, extending the lead to 2-0.

Reading continued to hit in the fifth inning with Sebastian Valle's leadoff single. The catcher would score on Anthony Hewitt's RBI Double. During the play, Hewitt advanced to third on a throwing error from Eugenio Suarez. He would later score on a sacrifice fly from Gilles, cementing he Phils take a 4-0 lead.

The SeaWolves would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, with James McCann's leadoff double. McCann reached third on James Robbins' groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Wade Gaynor cutting Reading's lead to three runs.

Erie continued to chip away in the seventh inning with a leadoff single from Hernan Perez. A single by Daniel Fields and sacrifice by Wade Gaynor brought Perez home and cut the FightinPhils' lead to 4-2.

It was in the eighth when Erie summoned up a little two out magic. Suarez and Perez each singled, prompting a pitching change. Fields was walked by Mauricio Robles to load the bases for McCann. With two strikes, McCann hammered the offering into the right field power alley to clear the bases and give the Seawolves a 5-4 lead. Justin Souza would finish the game with a three up, three down ninth.

SeaWolves pitcher Tyler Stohr(1-0) picked up the win going 2 scoreless innings in relief while Souza picked up his 6th save of the season in one runless relief inning. Starter Patrick Cooper received no decision, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, no walks, and 3 strikeouts.

Starter David Buchanan was left a no decision, after pitching a season best seven innings and allowing a season low two runs.

Erie will continue its three-game series tomorrow evening with a 6:35 pm start. RHP Warwick Saupold (2-1, 2.11 ERA) will take the mound for the Seawolves, as he goes up against LHP Jesse Biddle (2-2, 2.70 ERA).
