SWB Game Notes

May 13, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

THIRD TIME'S NOT THE CHARM: For the third straight day, the RailRiders mounted a late rally. For the first time in that span, it fell short. Thomas Neal struck out to leave the bases loaded in the ninth as the Gwinnett Braves beat SWB in a Mother's Day Sunday afternoon affair, 7-6.

NO QUINCEA=D1ERA: Gwinnett had lost 14 in a row, one short of the record for an Atlanta Braves' Triple-A club. That run included all of the club's first six clashes with the RailRiders. The G-Braves were held to three runs or less in all but one game during their 14-loss misery and were outscored 77-32 in the process. Over their last 16 games entering yesterday, they had plated two tallies or fewer a dozen times. The all-time record of 15 straight losses for an Atlanta Braves' Triple-A team was set by last year's squad from June 16-30. Four of those setbacks came against SWB from June 26-29. The streak was snapped in game two of a series at home against Charlotte on July 1 with a 6-5 walk-off win.

100K: Sunday's paid crowd of 4,752 lifted the team's season-long attendance at PNC Field over 100,000 to 101,471. To put that in perspective, the 2011 SWB squad did not crack 100,000 fans until June 17. The RailRiders became the sixth squad in the 14-team IL to reach the mark this season.

COUNT 'EM UP: Sunday's showing makes it five straight home openings with more than 4,000 fans at PNC Field. In fact, out of the team's last 10 home openings, just twice has the paid crowd fallen short of that mark. Both times, it missed narrowly including 3,911 for the April 25 contest against Columbus and 3,938 on May 7 versus Indianapolis. In 2011, the franchise never had a run of more than four straight games with 4,000 or more fans at PNC Field, much less in the early stage of the season while schools are still in session.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After tonight, the RailRiders will trek to Toledo to begin an eight-game road trip. It will start a spurt with 16 of 20 away from PNC Field. The lone exception will be a four-game series/homestand against a talented Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) team.

WHO'S ON FIRST?: Yesterday the RailRiders had a pair of late scratches as scheduled starter Brett Marshall was shelved and Corban Jospeh was crossed out as the leadoff man/second baseman. The Yankees made a roster move before the game with infielder Alberto Gonzalez getting called up before ever playing a game as a RailRider. In a corresponding move, former SWB favorite Reegie Corona joined the team from Double-A Trenton and took Joseph's spot both in the order and the field. Earlier today, Joseph was recalled by the Yankees under MLB's 26th-man rule for doubleheaders. He made his Major League debut in the opener as the seven-hole hitter and starting first baseman. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and ignited the team's lone double play, a 3-6-1 turn with Joseph's former SWB teammate Preston Claiborne on the receiving end. Other roster moves today had Marshall recalled by the Yankees as bullpen insurance, outfielder Brennan Boesch getting option to the RailRiders and tonight's starter, southpaw Nik Turley, getting called up from Double-A Trenton. Boesch is expected to join the RailRiders in Toledo tomorrow. He saw time in 20 games with the big club, mostly in right field. He hit .209/.244/.419 with two home runs and five RBIs and departed in a 3-for-24 (.125) slump with one home run.

THAT'S A START: The Opening Day battery for the RailRiders combined to start the second game of today's twinbill for the Yankees. Vidal Nuno made his first Major League start and did so with Austin Romine catching, batting ninth. Joseph started at second in the game and batted seventh.
