Colome Fans 11 as Bulls Earn Split with Lehigh Valley

May 13, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls completed their homestand with an 8-2 win over Lehigh Valley Monday afternoon at the DBAP. The victory earned the Bulls a split of their four game series with the IronPigs.

All nine Bulls in the starting lineup had hits and seven drove in runs, while starting pitcher Alex Colome (W, 2-5, 2.84) snapped a personal five-game losing streak while getting 11 strikeouts, the most by a Bulls pitcher since Chris Archer fanned 12 on May 24, 2012. Colome's eleventh strikeout also gave him 66 as a Bull, moving him past his uncle, Jesus, who pitched for Durham from 2001 to 2004.

The Bulls took an early lead when Vince Belnome singled in the second inning and scored on a Tim Beckham double. Durham added three runs in the third on some sloppy Lehigh play. Leslie Anderson walked with the bases loaded, and catcher Steven Lerud dropped a force-out throw at the plate.

After Lehigh Valley got a run back in the top of the fourth, Wil Myers singled home Rich Thompson in the bottom of the inning. Jason Bourgeois went 3-for-4 for the Bulls, with a single, double, and triple.

Reliever Cory Wade, signed earlier in the day, pitched the ninth inning for his first appearance as a Bull since June 10, 2011, striking out one. The series attracted a season-high paid attendance of 30,763 fans.

Durham now heads to Rochester for a four-game series against the Red Wings. RHP J.D. Martin (4-1, 3.69) starts for the Bulls tomorrow against Rochester's RHP Kyle Gibson (2-4, 3.32) at 7:05pm. The Bulls return to the DBAP on Saturday, May 18 for a quick two-game set with Norfolk.
