Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 13, 2013) - On Friday, May 24, the Fort Myers Miracle will pay homage to the 80th anniversary of the creation of drive-in movies with a Miracle-themed twist. After the final out of a 7:05 p.m. game with the Charlotte Stone Crabs is recorded, the Miracle will host a Field of Screams and fans will be invited onto the field to watch classic horror movies into the wee hours of the morning.
"We did this back in 1992," said General Manager Andrew Seymour. "Since we show movies on the grass during the Great All-Nighter, we thought we should bring back the Field of Screams."
The innovation of the drive-in movie took place in 1933 during the midst of the Great Depression. Richard Hollingshead, Jr. of Camden, N.J. opened the first drive-in movie theater on June 6, 1933. Located on Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Pennsauken, N.J., the original 400 space theater was open for three years. It wasn't until the late 1950's that the drive-in movie gained wide spread popularity with over 4,000 theaters operating in the United States.
The Miracle will honor the innovation of the drive-in movie with a throwback to the very first season in Fort Myers. Classic movies in the genre of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon might make the bill, but Seymour notes that the list is not set.
"It all depends on what movies we find and what mood we're in," said Seymour. "The main thing is that we want people to bring lawn chairs, sleeping bags and enjoy a night of scary movies under the stars."
Fans with a ticket to the game can stay for free. Any fans that just want to come and watch movies are also welcome to enjoy the evening free of charge. For tickets to the game, call the Miracle offices at (239) 768-4210 or visit www.miraclebaseball.com.
