Wild Walk-Off Finish in Woodbridge Propels P-Nats to Third Straight Win

May 10, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, VA- Exchanging home run blasts at the end of their series opening contest with the Winston Salem Dash (14-19, 6-11) on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium, the Potomac Nationals (18-16, 10-8) clinched their third walk-off win of the 2013 campaign courtesy of a solo home run off the stick of SS Jason Martinson, his seventh long blast of the season.

A pitcher's duel throughout, Potomac RHP A.J. Cole, who did not receive a decision, was solid through 5.0 innings allowing just one earned run on five hits while fanning seven. Cole hit one batter and walked a trio.

Conversely, Winston Salem RHP Chris Bassitt, who also did not factor into the decision, dealt 5.0 innings and surrendered one unearned run on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.

Potomac scored to put the game's first run on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when DH Kevin Keyes led off with a single blooped into right field and stole second base. With two outs, 1B Justin Miller walked amidst a 2-for-3 night at the plate to put runners at first and second base. As LF Billy Burns struck out, Keyes stole third, and on an errant throw by Winston Salem C Kevan Smith that clipped off the glove of 1B Brent Tanner, Keyes blazed to the plate to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.

The Dash evened the game 1-1 in the 4th frame with a triple belted by Smith to the right field wall on the fly which led to an RBI sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of DH Mark Haddow.

In the last of the 6th stanza, CF Michael Taylor crushed a two-run bomb off the left field foul pole which became the fair pole to give the Nationals a 3-1 advantage, for his fourth four-bagger of the season, which summoned home Miller who reached on an infield single up the third base line.

Winston Salem cut the contest to a 3-2 Potomac lead in the 7th stanza when 2B Joey DeMichele yanked an RBI double to the right center field gap to bring home the triple by RF Yoandy Barroso.

Then, Potomac provided an extra run of insurance in the 8th as 2B Francisco Soriano hooked a triple into the right field corner before Taylor raked an RBI fielder's choice to DeMichele at second base to bring in Soriano to provide a 4-2 lead for the home club.

In the top of the 9th inning, Potomac RHP Richie Mirowski (BS 3, 3-2), the eventual winning pitcher, struck out Barroso, induced a 4-3 groundout to CF Adam Heisler, then walked DeMichele. SS Chris Curley then sent a hanging offering from Mirowski over the wall in dead center field for his seventh tater of the season to force a blown save. Mirowski pitched out of trouble getting Smith on a comebacker to the mound.

Epically, the first batter in the bottom of the 9th inning, Martinson against LHP Max Peterson (0-3), the losing pitcher, fouled off a pitch before cranking his seventh round-tripper over the right field barrier the opposite way to catalyze an eruption of the first base side home dugout as Martinson got mauled at home plate. The dinger sealed the third walk-off win of the 2013 season.

Saturday evening, Game Two of the four-game set, will feature Potomac RHP Taylor Hill (3-1, 2.21) gunning against Winston Salem RHP Chris Beck (2-4, 1.50) on a Fireworks Saturday at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Potomac Nationals Baseball Network will begin streaming with the P-Nats Baseball Pre-Game Show at 6:20pm before the live play-by-play at 6:35pm. Broadcast coverage is accessible by heading to www.potomacnationals.com.
