Greensboro, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws (10-22) scored first, but could not hold on as the Greensboro Grasshoppers (15-17) came back to win 5-4 Thursday night at NewBridge Bank Park. The loss marks the fourth in five meetings against the Grasshoppers this season.
With the game tied at 1-1, it was the 'Hoppers plated two runs in the third inning to take the lead for good. With the bases loaded and one out, Jesus Solorzano drove home a run on a fielder's choice and Matt Juengel connected for a single to make it a 3-1 game after the third.
The BlueClaws cut it to 3-2 in the seventh on Art Charles' sacrifice fly to left; which scored Roman Quinn from third. In his first game back from the disabled list, Charles went 1-4 with a single and the sacrifice fly.
The 'Hoppers responded with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the frame and upped the lead to the highest total, at 5-2.
The BlueClaws again attempted to come back, but fell just short in the eighth. With one out and the bases loaded, Quinn connected for a two-run single to left-center and pulled the 'Claws within one, but that was as close as they would get as Frankie Reed struck out Josh Ludy and Charles to end the threat.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of a Mitch Walding sacrifice fly, but Greensboro responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie it.
Lino Martinez took the mound for the first time this season and pitched well over four and one-third innings. The lefty allowed three runs on six hits and also walked and struck out a trio in his debut. Martinez (0-1) was backed up by Jordan Guth, Jeb Stefan, and Felix Santos out of the bullpen. Stefan allowed the two runs in the seventh.
Mason Hope picked up his first win of the season after he finished five innings and allowed just the one run. Four other pitchers came on in relief to close out the win for Greensboro. Blake Logan earned his seventh save and struck out the side in the ninth.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of a Mitch Walding sacrifice fly, but Greensboro responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie it.
