Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Eight walks allowed sunk the Quakes' chances of earning a second consecutive win against the visiting Inland Empire 66ers, as Rancho fell to its California League rival, 9-7, on Wednesday afternoon at LoanMart Field.
The Quakes and 66ers traded punches and the lead in the second and third innings, but it was the 66ers who never looked back.
After the Quakes built a 4-0 lead in the second, Inland Empire responded with a five-run third. An error and four walks issued by starter James Campbell (1-2) cut the deficit to two and first baseman Michael Snyder followed with a two-RBI double to knot things up, 4-4. Zach Borenstein's single to center gave the 66ers a 5-4 lead and they never surrendered it.
With two out in the bottom of the second, four hits and a hit by pitch provided Rancho with a 4-0 lead.
Scott Schebler scored on Ryan Mount's single to center after being hit by a pitch and stealing his third base of the season. Following a Pratt Maynard base knock, Casio Grider cashed in a pair with a triple to deep right field. A single from Noel Cuevas made it 4-0 Quakes.
Andy Workman doubled home Snyder to push the lead to 6-4 in the fifth before another 66ers three-run outburst one inning later, highlighted by a three-run jack from third baseman Brian Hernandez.
Despite the loss, the Quakes were led by Noel Cuevas, who went 4-for-5 with an RBI, and multi-hit efforts from Schebler, Pratt Maynard and Ryan Mount, who added a pair of RBIs.
Inland Empire reliever Brandon Efferson (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
The loss drops the Quakes to 17-16 on the season, but they will have a chance to win the series in Thursday night's rubber match. Garrett Gould (1-2, 8.06 ERA), coming off his best start of the season, gets the call for Rancho, while Dan Reynolds (3-2, 5.04 ERA) takes the mound for Inland Empire.
