Birmingham Barons News Release

The Barons needed only five innings to score 16 runs on a wet night in Kodak, Tennessee, hitting a season-best four home runs in a 16-0 romp over the Smokies Tuesday night in front of 2,319 fans at Smokies Park.

Andy Wilkins started the scoring barrage with a solo home run in the second inning. The Barons offense was just getting started as Dan Black crushed a grand slam home run in the third to put the Barons up 6-0. It was the third home run of the season for Black and the third grand slam with all three coming on the road. Black finished 2-for-4 with five RBI and leads the Southern League with 30 RBI on the season.

Wilkins would crush his second long ball of the game immediately following Blacks's slam, the first back-to-back homers of the season for the Barons.

Tyler Saladino was respondible for much of the late offense, hitting a two-run double in the fourth and capping the scoring with a three-run homer in the fifth to put the Barons up 16-0. Shortly thereafter, the game was called due to wet grounds at Smokies Park.

The win went to LHP Spencer Arroyo (3-1, 2.06) who recorded the Barons' first complete game shutout since Terry Doyle on July 24, 2011 against the Smokies. The shutout victory was the fifth of the season for the Barons who improved to 21-10, 5.5 games above the second-place Smokies (15-15). The win also extended the Barons' season-best winning streak 8 games.

The Barons will look to make it two-straight in Tennessee tomorrow morning as RHP Erik Johnson (2-1, 1.30) takes the hill against RHP Dallas Beeler (3-2, 2.61). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 AM CDT.
