
Smokies Fall in Five-Inning Game Tuesday Night, 16-0

KODAK, Tenn. - Seeking to gain some ground on the in the North Division, the Tennessee Smokies could not keep pace both on the mound and at the plate with the Birmingham Barons, falling 16-0 Tuesday night. The loss drops the Smokies to 15-15 on the season.
Smokies starter Matt Loosen (0-1) looked to be on his game through the first two innings allowing just a home run to Andy Wilkins in the second inning. Loosen lost his command in the third inning, walking three batters and surrendering a grand slam to Dan Black, then followed with Wilkins' second home run of the game to give Birmingham a commanding 7-0 lead.
Loosen gave way to A.J. Morris, who didn't fair much better. Birmingham took advantage of two errors and plated six more runs in the fourth inning.
With the rain coming down harder at Smokies Park, the Barons scored three more times off Tony Zych in the fifth inning to take the 16-0 lead.
Birmingham starter Spencer Arroyo (3-1) kept the Smokies' bats in check all night. The Smokies hit into three double plays and were able to muster four hits on the night.
Following the fifth inning, the umpires called the game due to unplayable field conditions.
Tennessee and Birmingham will continue their five-game series tomorrow morning at 11:30 at Smokies Park. The Smokies will start righty Dallas Beeler (3-2, 2.61) and the Barons will counter with right-hander Erik Johnson (2-1, 1.30).
