Mathis joins Suns on MLB Rehab from Marlins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a series of transactions that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field.

Outfielder Jake Smolinski has been transferred to Triple-A New Orleans from Jacksonville. In 24 games, the 24-year-old compiled a .196 average (11-56), adding eight runs and four RBI for the Suns.

In addition, the Marlins announced catcher Jeff Mathis' Major League Rehab Assignment has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. The backstop, who suffered a broken collarbone during Spring Training after being hit by a foul tip, was acquired by the Marlins this past offseason from the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade on November 19, 2012.

Infielder Danny Black has also been placed on the Disabled List, retroactive to May 5, due to a left oblique strain. Prior to his injury, the California native recorded a .185 clip (15-81), adding a longball and five RBI in 22 games for Jacksonville.

In a corresponding move, infielder Noah Perio has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. Perio, the 13th-best prospect in the Marlins system according to MLB.com, accumulated a .310 mark (18-58), adding five runs scored and five RBI.

The Suns roster stands at 24, plus Mathis on Major League Rehab Assignment, and a revised roster is attached.

Jacksonville will begin a five-game homestand tonight at Bragan Field with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
