RedHawks Add Akins & King; Hunt Released

FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed OF Nick Akins and RHP Mackenzie King, while RHP Leroy Hunt has retired from baseball.

Akins, 25, joins the RedHawks after spending the past four seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Last season, Akins made stops with the Great Lakes (OH) Loons of the Midwest League (A) and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League (High-A). Between the two teams, he appeared in 84 games and batted .241 with 14 doubles, one triple, ten home runs, 32 RBIs and 44 runs scored.

Akins was selected by Dodgers in the 19th round of the 2009 draft out of Vanguard (CA) University. He was previously drafted by the Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2006 draft out of high school and the Washington Nationals in the 20th round of the 2008 draft. In his four-year professional career, Akins has batted .272 with 66 doubles, 11 triples, 56 home runs, 203 RBIs and 185 runs scored in 302 games. He has a career .507 slugging percentage.

King, 24, pitched last season with the Rockland (NY) Boulders of the Can-Am League. He was 3-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 30 games (two starts) for Rockland. King allowed 26 runs (21 earned) on 56 hits in 53.1 innings pitched. He struck out 44 batters and walked just 15.

King began his professional career in 2011 with the Pittsfield (MA) Colonials of the Can-Am League after finishing his college career at Pace (NY) University. He was 2-3 with a 7.42 ERA in 15 games (four starts) as a rooking in 2011.

Hunt opted not to report to training camp after the RedHawks signed him in late April.

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will continue training camp today with a late afternoon workout at Newman Outdoor Field. The club will kick off exhibition play on Monday and Tuesday with a pair of games against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park in Winnipeg, MB. Both games will start at 7:00 p.m.
