Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - Despite another strong pitching performance-this one from RHP Jay Rogers-the Jupiter Hammerheads mustered only four hits in their 5-0 loss to the Palm Beach Cardinals Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
After a leadoff double by Ross Wilson in the second, Noah Perio advanced him to third with a sacrifice bunt. On the next play, Wilson was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Isaac Galloway. That was the closest they came to scoring.
Three of Jupiter's four hits were doubles; they all came with nobody on base. The Hammerheads didn't have a base runner after the sixth inning.
RHP Tim Cooney pitched seven shutout innings for Palm Beach, allowing the four hits and one walk. He struck out six. Teammate LHP Lee Stoppelman worked spotless eighth and ninth innings.
Filling in for the recently DL'd Jacob Esch, Rogers pitched five strong innings for the Hammerheads, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and no walks while striking out three.
He threw 45 of 63 pitches for strikes (71 percent) while lowering his season ERA to 1.69 in 16 innings.
Including Rogers' start Thursday night, Hammerheads starting pitchers have allowed just 20 earned runs on 72 hits and 16 walks in 92.1 innings, good for a sparkling 1.95 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.
Austin Barnes' first inning double extended his hitting streak to five games. During that stretch, he's 9-for-21 (.429).
The Hammerheads will look to rebound from defeat tomorrow night in Game 2 of the three- game set at Roger Dean Stadium. Jupiter's RHP Jose Urena (1-1, 3.38 ERA) will oppose RHP Travis Miller (0-2, 1.42 ERA) for Palm Beach.
