Minor League Baseball President Pat O'Conner to Present Flying Tigers Suarez with Gold Glove Award

Lakeland, FL - Lakeland Flying Tigers shortstop Eugenio Suarez will be presented with his 2012 Rawlings Gold Glove Award prior to the Flying Tigers game on Tuesday, April 23 at Joker Marchant Stadium against the Clearwater Threshers. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and gates will open at 5:30 p.m. The Rawlings Gold Award will be presented at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Nine Minor League Baseball players were chosen as recipients of a 2012 Rawlings Gold Glove Award© for defensive excellence at their position. The honorees were selected among qualifying players from the 10 domestic-based, full-season Minor Leagues.

"Rawlings has celebrated defensive excellence at the professional level since the inaugural Rawlings Gold Glove Award team in 1957," said Mike Thompson, senior vice president of marketing for Rawlings. "Minor League Baseball is and will always continue to be a great partner of Rawlings, and we are thrilled to honor again the hard work and dedication of these nine superior defensive players with the 2012 Minor League Baseball Rawlings Gold Glove Award."

"The Rawlings Gold Glove Award is one of the few awards globally recognized in sports." President O'Conner will attend the game and present the award to Eugenio Suarez.

Suarez was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on October 9, 2008. He spent the entire 2012 season with the West Michigan Whitecaps. He was selected to the Midwest League's mid-season all-star squad and was named the West Michigan Player of the Year. Suarez had a .971 fielding percentage and led all Midwest League shortstops with 257 putouts. He was named the ninth-best prospect in the Tigers organization following the season by Baseball America.

Last year signaled the return of Rawlings recognizing Minor League Baseball players for their defensive prowess. Current Washington National Steve Lombardozzi was among the players honored in 2011. The St. Louis-based company named a Minor League all-star fielding team for several years in the 1960s. The honor was known as the Rawlings Silver Glove Award during this time.
