Idaho Steelheads News Release
Ontario, CA - Mario Lamoureux scored twice and Jean-Francois Berube stopped all 19 shots on net he faced as the Ontario Reign defeated the Idaho Steelheads Saturday night, 5-0, in Game 2 of their ECHL Western Conference semifinals, presented by KeyBank.
The best-of-seven series is now tied at one win apiece with Games 3, 4 and 5 scheduled for Boise next week.
After a scoreless first period, the Reign broke things open with a strong second period, netting three goals as they pinned Idaho in their own zone for much of the period. Mario Lamoureux, Brad Calla and Cameron Burt all scored to take a three-goal lead into the third period.
The Steelheads tried to rally in the third, earning an early power-play opportunity, but came up empty as shot after shot missed the Ontario net. Ontario would put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the span of 2:26 in the middle portion of the third, one from Everett Sheen and another from Lamoureux, to make it 5-0 with half of the third period yet to play.
There were two fights in the third period as Matt Case and Calla dropped the gloves at 5:49 of the final frame. The lengthy, spirited bout saw both players head to the penalty box with blood on their faces. Then, at 13:37 of the third, Hubert Labrie and David Walker went at it with Labrie landing a couple of punches before the two tumbled to the ice.
Ontario out-shot Idaho, 27-19, over the course of the game as the Steelheads sent several shots just wide of posts or just over the crossbar, as Berube picked up his first shutout of the postseason. Tyler Beskorowany took the loss for Idaho, stopping 17 of 21 shots before giving way to Josh Robinson early in the third period. Robinson stopped five of the six shots he faced in relief of Beskorowany. Idaho was 0-4 on the power play, including a brief 5-on-3 in the second period, while Ontario was 1-4 on the man advantage.
The series now shifts to Idaho with Game 3 coming up on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Arena. Game 4 (Friday) and Game 5 (Saturday) will also be played in Boise with tickets available for all three games by calling 208.331.8497 or logging on to www.idahosteelheads.com.
