Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced that catcher Jim Vahalik will return to the Wild Things. He had been with the Baltimore Orioles organization since November of last year.
The Wild Things acquired Vahalik from the London Rippers in July of 2012. The native of Westerville had chalked up 49 hits including 24 RBI in 174 at-bats while he was with the London Ripper's organization. As a Wild Thing he added 15 hits and nine RBI. He completed the 2012 season with a .239 batting average.
"I noticed Jim when we played London last season, and he was blocking balls in the dirt with no runners on base," said Bart Zeller, field manager for the Wild Things. "That is the true sign of a professional. He had a good spring with the Orioles but they decided to make him a first baseman. Jim wants to catch and will receive every chance to be our backstop when the season starts. Jim definitely is a gamer and brings great intensity to the game."
Vahalik, a graduate of the University of Toledo earned a .285 batting average, collected 13 home runs and 86 RBI's in his time with the Rockets.
In another move, the Wild Things traded OF Matt Fleishman to the Long Island Ducks for a player to be named later.
The Wild Things, who will host their 2013 Home Opener or Friday, May 24th will host an Open House at CONSOL Energy Park on Saturday April 13th when individual game tickets, including those for the Frontier League Home Run Derby and the All Star Game, will go on sale at 10 a.m. For information call or stop by the CONSOL Energy Park box office or log onto www.washingtonwildthings.com .
