Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa - According to officials at CONSOL Energy Park, RHP Shawn Sanford, will report to training camp this May for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial.

Sanford, a New Jersey native, was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 43rd round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Cinnaminson High School and in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft from the University of South Florida.

In 2012 the 24-year-old split his time between the {Single A} San Jose Giants of the California League and the {Triple A} Frezno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League. He completed the season with a 6-11 record, striking out 75 hitters in 120.1 innings pitched.

"We are excited about having Shawn Sanford as a part of the Wild Things pitching staff," said, Bart Zeller, field manager of the Wild Things. "He was a 13th round pick in the 2009 Draft by the San Francisco Giants, and clearly made his mark. In 2011, amongst all minor league pitchers who threw 150 or more innings, Shawn's ERA was second with a 2.55, while walking only 1.6 hitters for every nine innings of work. Shawn's desire to return to affiliated baseball, and our commitment to do all we can to make that happen is the primary reason he selected the Wild Things. Most important, he is a very motivated and courteous young man, who the fans of Washington will really love."

The Wild Things, who will host the 2013 Frontier League All Star Game in July, are gearing up for their season opener, scheduled for Friday May 24th.
