Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders have acquired non-import offensive lineman Dan Federkeil in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts. In exchange, the Stampeders send non-import linebacker Akwasi Antwi to the Argonauts. The Stampeders then signed Federkeil to a three-year contract.
Federkeil is a 29-year-old Medicine Hat native and Calgary resident who played at theUniversity of Calgary before turning pro. After playing on the defensive line for the Dinos, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts in 2006 and made the switch to offensive line. He spent four seasons with the Colts (2006-09).
Federkeil was Toronto's first choice (fifth overall) in the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft.
"We're very happy to welcome Dan to the Stampeders," said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "When we agreed to the trade on Friday, we understood there was an element of risk because Dan had been out of football for three years and we weren't sure if he would be interested in playing again.
"But when we spoke this weekend, he seemed eager to play and we were able to come to a cap-friendly agreement that rewards Dan if he makes the team and contributes."
After retiring in 2010 - due in part to the effects of a concussion - Federkeil returned to Calgary to finish his degree in economics. He has been medically cleared to return to the field.
"Being settled in Calgary with my young family, playing for the Stampeders is the best scenario I could ask for to resume my career." said Federkeil. "I'm excited for the chance to play football in Calgary again."
Federkeil played five seasons at the U of C and in 2005 was a finalist for the J.P. Metras Trophy as the top lineman in Canadian university football and was a second-team CIS all-star. He recorded 111 career tackles, including 20 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. Federkeil signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and played 28 games over four seasons. He earned a championship ring with the Colts after Indianapolis defeated Chicago in Super Bowl XLI.
