Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Guelph Storm earned their first win of the Western Conference Quarterfinals defeating the Kitchener Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday night. Ben Thomson and Radek Faksa scored for the Rangers in the loss. Kitchener leads the best-of-seven series 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled for Thursday night in Guelph.

The Rangers got on the board first, opening the scoring 12:31 into the first period. With seconds remaining in a Guelph power play, Kitchener forward Tobias Rieder forced a turnover in the neutral zone and helped spring veteran winger Ben Thomson on a breakaway. The New Jersey Devils prospect squeezed the puck through the five-hole of netminder Garret Sparks for his first of the postseason and sixth career playoff tally.

Kitchener out-shot the Storm 10-8 through the opening 20 minutes.

Guelph led shots on goal 14-8 in a scoreless second period.

The Rangers took a two-goal advantage just before the midway point of the final frame. Captain Ryan Murphy carried the puck over the line, moving it to third-year forward Eric Ming. His shot bounced behind Sparks, just short of the goal line, but import centre Radek Faksa battled to the crease to push it into the back of the net. The goal was the Dallas Stars prospect's first of the playoffs. Ming has a point in all three games of this series.

Defenceman Andrey Pedan put the Storm on the board with 5:30 left to play. The Russian import backhanded a shot by the glove of Rangers goaltender John Gibson. The unassisted goal was Pedan's second of the series.

The Storm pulled even on Pedan's second of the night, 3:20 later. The rearguard fired a high shot through traffic into the top corner of the net behind Gibson. Tanner Richard picked up an assist on the Moscow native's third of the playoffs.

Scott Kosmachuk's first of the playoffs put the Storm ahead 3-2 with just over two minutes to play. Gibson made the initial save, but could not corral the rebound and the veteran forward eventually hammered it past the netminder. His first career postseason tally was assisted by Brock Beukeboom and Robby Fabbri, the freshman's first career playoff point.

The Storm continued to out-shoot Kitchener in the third by a 21-17 margin and finished with a 43-35 overall advantage on the shot clock.

The Rangers continue to lead the best-of-seven Western Conference Quarterfinal series 2-1. Game 4 is Thursday night at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph.
