Louisiana IceGators News Release
Pensacola, Florida--Fortunately for the Louisiana IceGators, this weekend is over. While the IceGators played well early here in the Pensacola Civic Center, they could not overcome a mid-game surge by the Pensacola IceFlyers, losing 4-1. Jordan Chong led the IceFlyers with two goals.
Louisiana has six days to prepare for the final weekend of the regular season. They travel Friday to Biloxi to take on the Mississippi Surge before returning to Pensacola for the season finale against the IceFlyers. The IceGators can clinch home-ice advantage in the playoffs by winning one of those final two contests.
"It's a tough loss for us, but there's no excuse for us to lose," said IceGators coach Kevin Kaminski. "We played a solid first period. We had five quality scoring chances when we were down 1-0. We tilted the ice in the second period and outshot them 19-6. The third period was okay."
"It was one of those games if we score early, it's a different game. We hit posts, crossbars, and missed open nets. Pensacola and [goalie Gerry] Festa played well. They capitalized on our turnovers, and we couldn't hit water if we fell out of a boat."
Pensacola took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a Mike MacIntyre goal. Chong scored his first goal on a penalty shot 59 seconds into the second period. Ron Cramer extended the IceFlyers' lead early in the third period, while a Chong penalty kill goal made the score 4-0 with 10:14 remaining in the game. Jordan Boyer prevented a shutout with seven minutes left in the contest when he scored off a Clark Byczynski assist.
Kaminski says he wants to put this weekend behind him and focus on the two games ahead.
"We all have to be accountable and start preparing now for next weekend," Kaminski said. "We have to take care of our bodies, get rest, and get mentally focused."
