Mississippi Surge News Release
Matt Whitehead's breakaway goal with only nine seconds left in overtime broke a 2-2 tie, and broke the hearts of the Mississippi Surge as it lifted the Mississippi RiverKings to a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon in Southaven, Miss.
The win was the sixth straight for the RiverKings, the longest current winning streak in the Southen Professional Hockey League. The Surge is now tied with Columbus for sixth place in the standings. Columbus has four games left to play, the Surge has two.
The Surge held a 43-30 edge in shots on goal Sunday. The RiverKings scored two first period goals as Matt Harrington and Darrell Stoddard sandwiched goals around the Surge's goal by Anthony Collins.
After a scoreless second period, the Surge had a chance to tie the game when Joe Harharik had a penalty shot attempt. But RiverKing goalie Matthew Krahn made the save to maintain the RiverKings lead. However, Matt Grodon continued his recent hot play for the Surge with a goal at 8:53 of the third period to tie the game. Krahn made a couple of other big saves in the rest of the third period to force the overtime.
The Surge managed eight shots in a wide open extra session, until Whitehead's breakaway won the game. His goal came on the RiverKings' seventh shot of overtme.
The Surge will conclude the regular season with two home games this weekend. They host the Louisiana IceGators on Friday in another military appreciation night. Saturday the regular season concludes with the Surge hosting the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 7:05 p.m. That will be fan appreciation night with several giveaways throughout the night.
