Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan - Unlike the previous meeting in Muskegon two weekends ago, the Muskegon Lumberjacks were able to derail and slow down the high-octane Youngstown Phantoms offense and come away with a solid 4-1 home victory tonight at the L.C. Walker Arena.
The Phantoms (23-20-0, 46 points) tallied the game's first goal of the night at the 10:04 mark on the power play with a strike from the right faceoff circle from Nathan Walker that was assisted by Luke Stork to make it 1-0 Youngstown. A few minutes later, the Lumberjacks were able to knot the game at 1-1 at the 15:22 mark with Christian Heil's first goal as a Lumberjack and his 17th goal of the season as he ripped a wrist shot past Phantoms Goaltender Sean Romeo (19-15-0) that was assisted by Ben Storm.
The score would remain the same late into the second period when the Lumberjacks (26-14-8, 60 points) would score two goals in the final two minutes of the middle frame. At the 18:09 mark, Adam Gilmour would slither home his 17th goal of the season courtesy of a slick pass from Frederik Tiffels that was also helped by Ramus Bengtsson to make it 2-1 Lumberjacks. Shortly after with ten seconds left in the period, Chad McDonald would fire a hard slap shot past Romeo on a two-on-one odd man rush to quickly make it 3-1 Lumberjacks. Riley Alferd and Bengtsson were credited with the assists on the McDonald goal.
The third period for the second consecutive night belonged to strong defense and goaltending as Lumberjacks Goaltender Jordan Uhelski (5-4-3) would stop all nine shots that came his way in the final stanza. Muskegon would add an empty-net goal with 1:36 left in regulation as Brian Morgan would slide home his 19th goal of the season and third as a Lumberjack from just outside the Phantoms' blue line to cap off the home victory. McDonald and Storm would get the assists on the Morgan tally.
The Lumberjacks outshot the Phantoms for the game, 32-30, and Uhelski would stop 29 of the 30 shots that came his way. Three Lumberjacks led the way offensively with two points each in Rasmus Bengtsson (two assists), Ben Storm (two assists), and Chad McDonald (one goal and one assist). Youngstown was one-for-four on the man advantage, while Muskegon went empty on two opportunities. Muskegon improves to 2-2-1 on the season against Youngstown with three meetings left this season.
The Lumberjacks will begin a seven-game road trip next weekend with a pair of games against the Youngstown Phantoms next Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at 7:15 pm and 1:00 pm.
