Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A frustrating Friday ended with a 4-3 Waterloo Black Hawks loss to the Fargo Force in a shootout, beginning a two-game weekend at Scheels Arena.
Austin Ortega recorded the only shootout goal on Fargo's first opportunity, pushing a shot past the left skate of Eamon McAdam
Waterloo had taken the lead initially, nine seconds after a five-on-three advantage commenced in the opening minutes of the game, pulling ahead on a blast by Ian McCoshen from the right point. The goal at 2:55 put Waterloo ahead until 11:11, when Ortega dodged a poke-check inside the Waterloo line and lifted a shot to the short side corner. Alex Iafallo gave Fargo the lead less than five minutes later, sending a puck off of McAdam and inside the post from the left wing circle.
It took most of the second period, but the Black Hawks drew back even with 59.9 seconds remaining before intermission. On a power play and with goaltender Brendan Jensen missing his stick, the rebound of a McCoshen shot caromed to Justin Kloos, who stuffed it into the net from just outside the crease.
Jared Dedenbach gave the Force a new lead at 5:16 of the third period, flipping in the rebound of an initial shot by Gavin Bayreuther. However, Victor Newell helped save the day, scoring an equalizer with 1:47 remaining in regulation. After a Black Hawks rush was stopped, the Force were unable to clear the puck, and Newell's long wrister went under the crossbar as Jensen was screened.
The Hawks killed off a Fargo power play in the final minute of regulation and first minute of overtime, finishing the night six-for-six on the penalty kill. McAdam made 40 saves, while Jensen stopped 38 chances.
Waterloo and Fargo collide for their third consecutive matchup Saturday, at Scheels Arena once again. The Force edged Waterloo Monday at Young Arena, 3-2.
