
Sea Dogs Drop First Overtime Contest

SHAWINIGAN, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs and the Shawinigan Cataractes met for the second time this season in Saturday's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action as the Cataractes took the contest 3-2 in overtime.
Spencer Smallman tallied his first QMJHL goal while Noah Zilbert also scored and added an assist for the Sea Dogs. Sebastien Auger stopped 42 of 44 in the loss. Saint John fell to 19-30-1-0 in the defeat.
Alexandre Delisle-Houde and Peter Sakaris responded for Shawinigan with Frank Schumacher sealing the win in overtime. Marvin C-pper made 34 saves on 36 shots in the win as the Cataractes climbed to 12-32-4-2.
Delisle-Houde opened the scoring with the only goal in the first period. Houde beat Auger at 5:38 of the opening frame and Shawinigan held the lead to the end of the first.
Shots favoured the Sea Dogs 14-12.
Mackenzie Brown made his weight felt with a solid hit on Simon Boudreau that shattered the glass, causing a delay at 4:41 of the second.
Smallman grabbed his first goal in a Sea Dog uniform and first QMJHL marker with some style, firing a blistering wrist shot past C-pper at 7:40 of the second period. With the Sea Dogs a man up, Zilbert powered into the zone and threw the defence by faking a shot and finding Smallman with a perfect pass to set up the play. Ian Saab also grabbed an assist on the play.
Oliver Cooper and Dylan Labbe dropped the mitts with Cooper landing a big right hand to send Labbe down to the ice at 17:35.
Sakaris put Shawinigan back up on top 2-1 at 18:46 of the second.
Shawinigan outshot Saint John 18-10 during the extended second period.
Zilbert tied the game up at 2-2 at 2:41 as Marcus Cuomo served it up on a platter for the Fredericton native to put away his sixth of the year and first on the power play. Pierre Durepos also got into the mix, firing a point shot that started the play.
Auger stepped up in the final few minutes of the game, making big saves to keep the game tied and bringing the game to overtime.
Shots were 42-36 in favour of Shawinigan at the end of regulation.
Schumacher ended the game in the extra frame with 2:17 to go, giving the Cataractes the win.
The Sea Dogs return home Thursday to take on the PEI Rocket at 7 p.m. It's also the PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) cereal drive, where the Sea Dogs are asking fans to bring in boxes of nutritious cereal or cereal bars that will be donated to breakfast programs in schools around the district.
