Gatineau Tops Sea Dogs in Wild Contest

February 1, 2013 - Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Saint John Sea Dogs

GATINEAU, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs continued the road trip, visiting the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday. The Olympiques came out on top 6-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Stephen Anderson scored for the Sea Dogs as Alex Fournier stopped 20 of 26 in the loss as Saint John dropped to 19-30-0-0.

Derek Sheppard scored twice while Martin Reway and Rock Régimbald each had a goal and an assist for the Olympiques. Robert Steeves made 20 saves on 23 shots in the win. Gatineau climbed to 22-24-1-2 in the victory.

The first period was a battle of goaltenders with Fournier and Steeves making great saves until the 18:29 mark where Anderson snapped one past Steeves on the power play.

Anderson picked up a rebound laying in front of Steeves and put the Sea Dogs ahead with the man advantage late in the first.

Shots in the first were 11-9 for the Sea Dogs.

Only a few moments into the second, Gatineau evened things up, also on the man advantage as Régimbald beat Fournier at 2:06.

Fisticuffs ensued in the Gatineau zone after a save by Steeves, with Duda and Samuel Courtemanche dropping the gloves in the first scrap of the game at 5:31.

Justin Dickinson and Mika"l Beauregard dropped the gloves in fight No. 2 on the night at 7:51 of the second in a spirited tilt.

Just seconds later, Fournier made a great save with the left pad, but Sheppard was first on the puck and put the rebound in at 8:15.

Gatineau had a goal waved off at 9:09 to keep things within reach for the Sea Dogs.

Jason Cameron had a breakaway as he blocked a pass on the penalty kill, skated up the ice and fired a quick shot, but was stopped by Steeves.

Sheppard put away his second of the game, this time on the power play. Fournier got a piece of the shot, but couldn't completely stop it. The goal made it 3-1 Gatineau at 11:48.

The defines-first second period fell slightly in favour of the Olympiques with shots 6-5.

Reway scored twice in the third. His first came at 2:13 with a power play, and his second tallied at 4:57 of the final frame to make it 5-1 Gatineau.

The Sea Dogs had three or four chances just seconds after the Gatineau goal, but Steeves shut the door.

Tardif-Richard made it 6-1 Gatineau at 12:24, again with the power play.

LeBlanc scored for the Sea Dogs at 14:17 to make it 6-2.

Cuomo tipped home his fifth of the year at 18:04 as the Dogs had a power play, bringing them as close as they would get at 6-3.
