Crew Signs Agustín Viana

January 28, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew has agreed to terms with defender/midfielder Agustín Viana as a Discovery Signing, the club announced Monday. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, details of the contract were not disclosed. The 29-year-old will be officially added to the club's roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

A left-footed player capable of playing leftback or central midfield, Viana comes to Columbus from Uruguayan Primera División side Bella Vista. The American-born player started in all 15 of Bella Vista's matches during the 2012-13 Apertura, tallying two goals. Viana has plied his trade across Europe and South America, playing for Levadiakos in the Greek Super League, Gallipoli of the Italian Serie B, CFR Cluj of the Romanian Serie A, Atlético Mineiro of the Brazilian Serie A and Nacional Montevideo of the Uruguayan Primera División. Viana began his career with Bella Vista, making more than 50 appearances for the Montevideo-based club from 2001-05 before transferring to cross-town rival Nacional.

"Agustín is a player that brings versatility and experience to our lineup, and we're pleased to have finalized his signing," said Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss. "He's a box-to-box player that provides a lot of energy, and being able to play on the left side of defense or in central midfield gives us flexibility and depth at multiple positions. We look forward to getting him into training camp."

Viana holds dual citizenship in the United States and Uruguay and will not occupy an international roster slot. He is set to join the Crew immediately for preseason training in Bradenton, Fla. pending transfer approval. He is the second Crew signing from abroad in the past week following the recent acquisition of Brazilian centerback Gláuber.
