IceDogs Lose Heartbreaker 2-1 to Barrie in OT
January 24, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs fell to the visiting Barrie Colts by a score of 2-1 in overtime at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on Thursday night.
The first period of the night was a hard fought battle as the IceDogs and the Colts searched for their first goal. Both goaltenders, Chris Festarini and Mathias Niederberger, played well and kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 20 minutes. Shots after one were 16-10 Barrie.
In the second period both teams increased the intensity as they fought to find the go ahead goal but the score remained even at zero. The IceDogs created great opportunities but were unfortunately could not bury the puck. Both goaltenders remained calm and collected under pressure. The shots after two favoured Barrie 22-20 and the game remained scoreless heading into the third period.
The third period was pivotal in this Thursday night matchup for the IceDogs as they searched for the win. Early in the third, the IceDogs had several near misses and showed great defensive pressure. The sharp goaltending made offensive breaks difficult to come by but with just over two minutes to go, Steven Shipley would bury a rebound to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the lead would not last as with just over a minute to go the Barrie Colts would tie things up at 1-1. Unable to decide things in regulation time, the game would move into overtime. Shots after regulation were 32-30 Colts.
Tempers flared at the beginning of the overtime period as both teams amped up their intensity. Unfortunately for the IceDogs faithful, the Barrie Colts would score only 35 second into the overtime period to give Barrie the 2-1 victory.
Your Niagara IceDogs will be back in action at home on Saturday, January 26th at 7pm against the Saginaw Spirit. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
