Tolchinky nets overtime winner in Sudbury

January 24, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Soo Greyhounds News Release

They were two teams battling for Northern Ontario bragging rights. And while the Soo Greyhounds have been productive over their last 15 games (10-4-0-1), so to have been the Sudbury Wolves. So well as a matter of fact, the Wolves had just one regulation loss during that time while accumulating a record of 10-1-3-1 themselves.

And on Wednesday Night they met for Game 5 of the Bell Challenge Cup. Entering the night the Greyhounds would receive an extra offensive boost as SERGEY TOLCHINSKY (15-14-29) returned to the line-up after meeting the team's last 3 games.

JUSTIN NICHOLS got the call between the pipes for his 11th start of the season, while Wolves netminder Frank Palazzese began his 6th game in a Sudbury jersey.

Through the opening half half of the first, the Wolves built up an early two goal cushion.

Dominik Kubalik beat the Hounds defender on the left wing before cutting in alone on Nichols and sliding the puck low for the 1-0 lead at 7:56.

Less than two minutes later Matt Schmalz pounced on the rebound after the Wolves worked the puck on the slot through and a now had a two goal cushion.

The lead would be cut in half with the Hounds on their first powerplay. Just over the midway point, COLIN MILLER skated into open space before putting a wrist shot glove side on Palazzese for his 12th goal of the season.

Then with the Hounds shorthanded BRANDON ALDERSON had one chance before NICK COUSINS fired wide of an out of position Wolves netminder to remain trailing by a goal.

Sudbury equalled the Hounds powerplay production while increasing their lead at 13:29 when Mathew Campagna backhand a puck low that originally went off a stick and to him in front, past Nichols for the 3-1 lead after the opening twenty minutes.

And while the Hounds opening period wasn't razor sharp, the locals were sure to change that right from the start of the second period.

In the opening seconds DYLAN STAPLES and TYLER GAUDET worked the play deep offensively for the first 40 seconds and the momentum carried over to the next shift.

After NICK COUSINS won the offensive draw back to DARNELL NURSE, the Hounds defender drove to the net before sliding the puck home for his 10th goal of the season and pulled the Hounds within a goal once again.

Through the opening 2:51 of the period the Hounds fired 7 shots on the Wolves goal while forcing them into multiple icing calls in an attempt to relieve the Hounds momentum.

ANDREW FRITSCH made the Hounds 2-for-2 on the powerplay and tied the game just over five minutes in when he brought the puck around the goal and banked it off of Palazzese and in for a 3-3 tie.

A hard bounce off the end boards in Sudbury territory eventually worked up to Brody Silk who had a step on the Hounds and while he was stopped by NICHOLS, a penalty would be called giving Sudbury one of their three powerplays to end the game.

After killing off the Wolves man advantage, the Hounds continued to see solid netminding from NICHOLS who turned aside 18 shots in the second period, including multiple shots from scrambles in front and the Hounds had climbed into a tie heading into the third period.

Killing off a Sudbury powerplay just 26 seconds in, the Hounds would wait until 12:04 to grab their first lead of the night and cap off three straight goals by the club.

NICK COUSINS started the play by moving the puck from the Wolve's netminders right to SERGEY TOLCHINSKY at the left of the goal. Tolchinsky held the puck momentarily before sending it back to Cousins who would roof it for a 4-3 Greyhound lead.

Charlie Dodero put an innocent looking shot off the right wing on goal just over two minutes later to now make it a 4-4 tie.

Sudbury outshot the Hounds slightly, 9-7 in the third and overtime would be on deck.

Just 1:21 into the extra session, ANDREW FRITSCH's pass to TOLCHINSKY saw a shot high right and in on Palazzese for the thrilling come-from-behind win for the Hounds.

With the victory the Hounds record improved to 25-19-2-1, good for 53 points. They trail 2nd place Plymouth by a single point and now find themselves 2 points out of the West Division lead.

Next action for the locals is this coming Friday Night - January 25th when they host the Windsor Spitfires. Game time is 7:07 p.m. and we invite you to be part of the action by visiting the Essar Centre Box Office (weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) by ordering online at www.essarcentre.ca or by phone at 1.866.775.9422.
