The Sidekicks put themselves within one just 52 seconds into the fourth quarter. Couch was credited with his third assist of the night, helping shave Rio Grande Valley's lead to 6-5. The first half of the period saw the ball primarily in the Sidekicks end. A Sidekicks offensive rush toward the end of the quarter created several chances, but soon after Nick Stavrou was introduced as a sixth attacker, Armando Teran extended Rio Grande Valley's lead to 7-5 at 13:13. Only 35 seconds later Sean Bellomy scored his third goal of the season to put the Sidekicks back in it, but at 14:43 Hector Valley scored to cement a Rio Grande Valley victory with a final score of 8-6.
The Sidekicks were under pressure from Rio Grande Valley for the majority of the third quarter, forcing goaltender Sagu and the Sidekicks defense to come up with several great saves and blocks. Efrain Martinez eventually succeeded in taking back the lead for the Flash at 7:34.
Soon after the Sidekicks killed off Rio Grande Valley's third powerplay of the match, the Sidekicks found themselves on their first powerplay of the night. A little more than one minute in, Edgar Flores intercepted a pass and scored the first shorthanded goal against the Sidekicks this season, putting his team up 6-4 at 10:29.
The second quarter saw the Sidekicks making their biggest comeback of the season so far. Rio Grande Valley once again capitalized early in the quarter, Erick Flores getting one past Sidekicks goaltended Sagu at 2:52. Soon after, Robson de Souza took advantage of a scramble in front of the net, cashing in on a rebound at 5:07. Rio Grande Valley had a 4-1 lead, but it only took 32 seconds for the Sidekicks to begin their comeback, scoring three goals throughout the remainder of the quarter. New acquisition Mark Withers got his first Sidekicks goal (unassisted) at 5:39. A few minutes later during a Rio Grande Valley powerplay, Couch connected a pass to Lovegrove, who shot off and found himself alone facing goaltender Juan Gamboa.
Lovegrove made a quick decision to shoot it to Gamboa's left, putting the Sidekicks within one at 8:26. The Sidekicks have scored a PASL-high four shorthanded goals this season. At 13:09 Shamu tied up the match for a second time, shooting at an angle and connecting to bring the score to four-a-side going into halftime.
Rio Grande Valley was quick to get the action started, Alejandro Morales scoring quickly just 1:29 into the first period. After a fairly even amount of possession from both sides, the Sidekicks put themselves on the board and tied the game at 6:30. Shamu took control of a pass from Couch and blasted it into the upper-right corner of the net, far out of reach for Gamboa. Jose Malacara took back the lead for Rio Grande Valley, scoring unassisted at 12:24.
The Sidekicks will return home on Sunday, January 27 to take on the San Diego Sockers (10-0) at 6:00 p.m. at the Allen Event Center. The Sockers currently hold a 47-game winning streak- a record high for consecutive victories in all professional sports.
