SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs met the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Harbour Station on the stormy Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. The Sea Dogs took the contest with a 2-1 shootout win.
Jakub Izacky scored to tie the game and netted the shootout winner for Saint John while Sebastien Auger made 32 saves on 33 shots in the win. MacKenzie Brown also scored in the shootout as the Sea Dogs climbed to 19-25-0-0.
Justin Hache responded for Cape Breton in regulation and Michael Clarke was the lone Screaming Eagle beat Auger in the shootout. David Honzik also stopped 32 of 33 as Cape Breton dropped to 9-29-3-5.
Cape Breton used the man-advantage to open the scoring at Harbour Station. Hache put the Screaming Eagles on the board at 10:48.
Shots in the first were 13-5 in favour of the Eagles.
The Sea Dogs had a great chance at the midway point of the second period with Marcus Cuomo out in front of the Cape Breton net. Pierre Durepos had the puck behind the net and fed Cuomo who had the puck bounce before he could snap off a quick shot.
The second saw no scoring, and shots were 12-7 for the Screaming Eagles.
The Sea Dogs solved Honzik just past the halfway point of the third. At 10:56 of the final frame, Maxime Villemaire forced a Cape Breton turnover and found Izacky all alone. Izacky help the puck, waited out Honzik and put it in with a backhand shot.
Regulation ended with the game all tied at 1-1. Overtime solved nothing, and the game headed to a shootout.
Brown and Izacky each beat Honzik while only Clarke could sneak one past Auger as the Dogs snapped the five-game skid with the win in the extra frame.
The Moncton Wildcats come to town tomorrow for a Sunday afternoon game. Tickets can be found at the Harbour Station box office, by calling 657-1234 or online at tickets.harbourstation.ca.
